Motorola has successfully launched many series of mobile phones and smartphones and has established itself as reputed manufacturers. They had to be because they are the originator of communication. Now they have set a new tradition of smartphones. Their Moto X series are equally successful. They presented the series with Android operating system which is on one side is customizable in many manners and on the other functionality with simplicity; both are complementary each other. Motorola introduced Moto X 2013 with everything wonderful and now whatever was missing in X2013 has been furnished in X 2014. This way the later model is the true example of evolution. Let us see here in shape of comparison what both have and where they stand in comparison to each other.
The later model, Moto X 2014 is bigger in design then the previous one. We cannot say whether it is good to be large in size or not it is a matter of personal liking of the user. However size is the mark of distinction in the flagships. Here we may comment the size of Moto X 2013 is better and rather perfect. It is better manageable and convenient to hold and operate in one hand. On the other side Moto X 2014 model has its own features. It is surrounded by aluminum frame and option for leather casing. Both have their own merits.
New Moto X 2014 is a flagship and has larger and sharper looking display. It is 5.2 inches AMOLED screen having 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. On the other hand Moto X 2013 has 4.7 inches AMOLED display with 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. On both details are equally prominently visible and do not look much different. Looking at them carefully Moto X 2014 really looks bigger and more clear in details.
On this score both are equal. Both have AMOLOED display and have the same qualities. Both have over saturated color reproduction, wide viewing angles and better visibility in the direct bright light.
Software, User Interface & Functionality
Both the handsets run Android operating system and give us the same user friendly, simple user interface. Both the handsets have superficial visuals and provide us flexibility of personalization which is the characteristic feature of Android. It has simplicity as its basic philosophy rather than pilling up more and more just for the sake of adding the number without much utility.
Despite having the same things Moto X 2014 model has enhanced features. It has touch less control and functions on Moto voice with some modifications over the original voice command system which Google is working on now. Moto X 2014 also provides support to third party apps; connecting and posting a massage on facebook or you can give the command to your handset to take photography just by customized voice command.
Moto display and Moto actions are other additions which Moto X 2013 does not have. The IR technology has been usefully employed which can recognize motion of the hand on the display.
The new handset is also improved in its processor like the new feature like Moto Actions and IR function of recognizing the movement of hand to silence the incoming phone call or alarm. It can read you the incoming messages also if you are not free to read it yourself like when you are driving. Though the previous one has the flexibility of receiving updates, yet the new one is better and improved.
Processor and Memory
The new model, Moto X 2014 is better equipped and has better assets. It has a quad-core 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC with 2GB of RAM contrary to 2-generations older quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 2GB of RAM in last year’s Moto X 2013 unit. These are the academic differences but practically you will not find much of variation in performance and responses the new will give you. However in the new model you will find newer gaming titles.
Bothe handsets have the same memory options. They are available in 16GB and 32GB capacities and the new handset does not have any facility to extend the memory externally because no provision of installing microSD card is there. Although 16 GB and 32 GB capacities are reasonable enough but in this modern age of smartphones, tablets and phablets and their internet connectivity, this seems to be restricted space for downloading heavy and large files. Maybe personal data and couple of video games and some movies may not be accommodated in this capacity.
The Moto X 2013 and 2014 has similar camera features. They are identical in interface and shooting modes, however the hardware gear in two handsets is different. Moto X 2013 has 10-megapixel “Clear Pixel” camera which did not prove to be very efficient and producer of good results. Learning from the experience Motorola improved and replaced with 13-megapixel camera. Despite bigger capacity camera we yet have to compare minutely to give preference to one over the other. However the identical features place them at par with each other. The new camera has warmer color reproduction. The new Moto X camera produce’s a livelier and vibrant quality whereas the older model has subdued and lukewarm look. In low light conditions the new camera does not produce as good images as the older one does.
The Moto X 2013 lacked in call quality and had the distorted voice complaints. Improving upon the previous, Motorola has now incorporated 4 microphones resulting in excellent call quality and clarity of voice. The new improvements definitely have the improved the quality of sound and made the calls a pleasure.
There are many components in the smartphone and each one with its function is very important. Making and receiving calls is one basic and important function while messaging is an integral part of our routine life. Photography is another important aspect. We have named only three and they are never simultaneously used. There is one component which is constantly working and in use and that is battery. Battery life is a very deciding factor and focal point when buying the handset. We always want a powerful battery which should last longer and allow us to enjoy the functions uninterrupted. Somehow Motorola did not perform well on account of battery and it performed just average. One more thing that shocks us is the battery performance of the new version which performs less than the older. We might justify it on the basis of bigger size design which needs more power.
Tests have been carried out to find out exact performance of the battery. Motorola Moto X 2013 lasts 5h 45 min which can be rated good. On the other hand Motorola Moto X 2014 endures less than the previous but 5h 45 min, though less is yet rated good.
The other aspect of battery is charging time it takes. Motorola Moto X 2013 takes 139 minutes to charge to full. On the other hand, Motorola Moto X (2014) requires176 minutes to take the full charge. Examining the performance of battery whatever we have read above is not bad at all. The battery in the both handsets performs almost equal. Another important factor in battery is its charging time. On this score Moto X 2013 with 139 minutes is much batter.
We said Moto X 2014 is new and improved version of the previous model 2013. Certainly it has many common features with the previous saw above, its interface is identical, the camera features are similar and the operating system is same. Despite these similarities, there are many differences too and the new version is definitely an improvement over the previous. Therefore we cannot out rightly consider them at par with each other. Moto X 2014 has much better call quality. It is better in design and the camera performance is on so improved and much better. It has made of the deficiency which existed in the previous version.
Motorola has looked into each detail minutely and has improved each one of them. This over all addition and perfection in performance has given it a higher place over the predecessor. The users may still go for the previous version because of its handy size and convenience in holding and handling with one hand. This could be an important deciding factor in favor of Moto X 2013.
If you own the Moto X 2013 you may not easily be convinced to change it just for the superficial and apparently not very useful features. You may still like to stick to your old handset. There may be users who prefer using a larger size handset with bigger screen and they may decide in favor of the new version. The company has added an attraction to the new handset by pricing it moderately at $99.99 on contract. If you are not very egger to change your old handset, no argument can convince you to buy the new Moto X 2014.
