Android 11, the next major software version from Google, is finally released after months of beta testing. Android 11 is not only available for Pixel phones but is also getting a much wider release to include some phones from OnePlus, Realme, OPPO, and Xiaomi. Google says that “more partners will be pushing the upgrade over the coming months.” Android 11 focuses on three important segments: People, Controls, and Privacy. The Android 11 also comes with a dedicated space for conversations.
Eligible smartphones receiving Android 11
Google has reserved a couple of features for Pixel devices, including the new AR-location sharing, built-in Google Smart Reply functionality to Gbaord in more chat applications, and intelligent folder naming. Android 11 stable update is now available to download on Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3A, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4A phones. Additionally, OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are receiving Android 11 updates through open beta. OPPO Find X2, Reno 3, Realme X50 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10, and Mi 10 Pro are also getting the update through a public beta.
New features
Conversations
The first noticeable change that Android 11 brings to your phone is the dedicated space for all your text and instant messages that is available in the notifications section. It is called Conversations. The new addition makes it easier for you to view any of the important conversations at a glance. Moreover, an option to mute notifications for certain conversations is available to stay focussed at your work and don't get disturbed by usual messages.
Bubbles
The second noticeable change that comes with Android 11 is Bubbles. It works just like how Chat Heads work on Facebook Messenger and lets you take a look at your important conversations without leaving the work you're doing on your mobile phone.
Built-in screen recording
If you're a Pixel phone user, you might have installed a third-party app for screen recording as Google didn't offer that support by default up until now. However, that will not be the case anymore with Android 11 as it finally comes with a built-in screen recording feature. To make things sweeter, you also have the ability to control whether you want to record audio or show touches on the screen.
Redesigned media controls
Controlling media in Android 11 is pretty interesting. Instead of the standard playback notification, you can have your media controls show up in the quick settings panel. This part of the panel will also show up to 5 total media “sessions,” allowing the user to swipe through and easily resume playback from other apps and devices.
One-time permissions
Interestingly, Google has also brought the new One-time permission feature to apps that need your microphone, camera, or location. This means that the app will ask for your permission each time when you use it on your phone. This is certainly a much-welcomed addition as it really provides users more control over their privacy.
Auto-reset permissions
In addition to one-time permissions, Android 11 lets you auto-reset permissions for your unused apps. This is quite helpful if you don't want an app to keep accessing your data even when it's not being used for a long time.
