Editor Rating: 3.9 / 5

There are quite a few choices out there for a decent sized tablet device including the Apple iPad, and even the new Nokia Lumia 2520. One aspect of concern for each of these tablets is the display performance.

The Nokia Lumia 2520 features an impressive display. "The display on the Nokia Lumia 2520 provides record high ambient light performance and screen readability, with by far the brightest mobile display we have ever tested with an incredible maximum brightness of 684 cd/m2 sometimes called nits. It is 52 percent brighter than the iPad Air with 449 cd/m2. Together with its low 5.7 percent screen Reflectance it has a Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light of 120, by far the largest we have ever measured for a Tablet," the report from DisplayMate states.

Screen and life performance

Not only is the Lumia 2520 better in terms of ambient life performance and screen readability, but the Windows RT tablet from Nokia also features an impressive contrast ratio. "But more impressive is that the Lumia’s Contrast Ratio at 1,000 lux is already 78 percent larger than the iPad’s. At 2,000 lux, which corresponds to low level outdoor lighting, the Lumia’s Color Gamut is larger than the iPad’s and then keeps getting comparatively better as the ambient light increases," the report added.

Pixel density

Nokia's new tablet will also have to take on the just-announced iPad Air, which Apple claims is the "lightest full-size tablet in the world." The new iPad Air sports a 9.7-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels and a pixel density of 263ppi. The Nokia Lumia 2520 on the other hand, comes with a 10.1-inch full-HD IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, and a pixel density of 218ppi.

The iPad Air is Apple's fifth-generation full-size tablet. It features the same 9.7-inch Retina display found on the previous third- and fourth-generation models, sports a significantly thinner and lighter design than its predecessors. Apple achieved this in part by reducing the bezel on the sides of the display, giving the full-size tablet a more svelte look and feel.

The iPad Air is powered by a 64-bit A7 chip which also powers the new iPhone 5s, offering up to two times faster CPU and graphics performance than the previous generation iPad. It also features the M7 motion coprocessor that takes care of measuring motion data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass sensors, sending them to apps without waking up the A7 processor, leading to improved battery life. The Nokia Lumia 2520 is powered by a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

The new iPad Air features a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.2-megapixel front facing one. It supports 1080p HD video recording. The Nokia Lumia 2520, on the other hand, features a 6.7-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.

The battery of Nkia lumia 2520 can easily last till a full day of heavy usage and the quick charging capability was awesome.

Apple iPad Air Amoved to a 32.4Wh battery, a significant decrease from the 42.5Wh unit in the 3rd and 4th generation iPads. The smaller battery does not come with a change to Apple’s claim of 10 hours of battery life, which implies a reduction in overall platform power.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia Lumia 2520 is available now for $399 with a two-year contract or $499 without any contract from AT&T and Verizon. The pricing on the iPad Air is the same as it is always been for Apple's full-size tablets. The entry-level, Wi-Fi-only model offers 16-gigabytes of storage, with capacities doubling for $100 extra, up to 128 gigabytes. Models with cellular radios and GPS come with a $130 premium.
