Pixel 4a XL might be Google’s first 5G phone; Pixel 4a in the works too

Google is working on affordable versions of Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Those cheaper variants are supposed to be called Pixel 4a and 4a XL. The thing that surprised us is the Pixel 4a XL could be Google’s first 5G smartphone. The info comes from XDA developers, which got some hints when they were going through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) of Pixel 4 firmware. Some newest Android 10 apps revealed three codenames – Sunfish, Redfin, and Bramble. The last third is working on Linux so that it won’t be a Pixel phone. However, Sunfish and Redfin are being developed on Android 10, and hence XDA tipped them to be Pixel 4a and 4a XL, respectively.

Furthermore, the AOSP source code revealed. Sunfish is based on a sm7150 chipset that is the codename of SD730. On the other hand, Redfin used to run sm7250, which is the codename of Snapdragon 765G. Since the later one is a 5G-capable chipset and Google has not yet launched any 5G smartphone, so there are chances Pixel 4a XL to be a 5G cell phone. Another reason is it will be too late to introduce a Pixel 5G phone in the form of Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL by the end of 2020.

Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL are expected to launch in May 2020, as the Pixel 3a and 3a XL were released in May 2019. We hope Pixel 4a duo would cost below $500.
