Huawei Nova Y60 is an entry level smartphone lacking Google Mobile Services and is trying to overcome drawback by offering some fair advantages at the given price. It is one of the victims facing chip shortage. Hence we saw MediaTek chipset in Nova Y60, rather than Huawei Kirin.

Design

Having a wide flat screen, Nova Y60 looks elegant and thick (9.2 mm), weighs in at 185 grams. The device is available in two colors Black and Crush Green. The display panel obtains a punch hole selfie lens. A side-mounted FR is there for biometric unlock. The back acquires a rectangular-shaped camera setup, containing three lenses and a LED flash. A 3.5 mm audio jack and USB Type C found at the bottom. The gadget is not dust and water proof, and hence no IPX rating.

Display and OS

The big disadvantage of Nova Y60 is a poor display. Nova Y60 used TFT technology and limited to HD+ resolution, not delivering Full HD+ content.

Android 11 comes pre-installed with EMUI 11.0.1. You got better navigation, dynamic media controls, built-in screen recorder, greater control over conversation, notification history (recalling cleared notifications), and temporary permission for apps for a better privacy. An amazing feature is a Schedule Dark Theme. As the name shows, it lets you choose when your phone should adapt to Dark mode. Unfortunately, it does not support Google Mobile Services like Play Store, YouTube. All of them got replaced with HMS core. Huawei Mobile Services give you alternative for all GMS applications.

Optics

For photography lovers, camera contains a 13-megapixel (f/1.8 aperture) primary shooter, 5-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) ultra-wide lens, and a 2-megapixel (f/2.4 aperture) depth sensor. The entry level phone allows Full HD video recording. The camera app is packed with lots of features such as best shot, manual mode (for front and back cameras), sample color, live filter, night vision, portrait lighting, and Google Lens integration. The photo shots are favorable in daylight and passable at night mode. The front facing camera is an 8MP sensor and clicks Full HD selfies. Just passable! Since it lack dynamic colors and details.

Chipset

As the Huawei faces ban and shortage of chipset, Huawei NOVA Y60 switches to Helio P35 processor. The RAM is 4GB, pretty cool and the basic storage is 64GB, The phone has a MicroSD card slot for memory expansion. Battery life is just amazing – rated at 5000 mAh. A mix of watching, playing, browsing, or talking, Nova Y60 goes up to two days. Heavy gameplay or continuous use may end up at the bed. Not compatible with a fast charge, thus you have to comprise with standard charge and wait for about two hours for a 100% top-up.

Verdict

If you compromise with Google services and HD+ Display, buying Huawei Nova Y60 is fine. Otherwise, you should look for a better alternative like Redmi 10.
