Introduction
As sure as day follows night, there’s always a new OnePlus smartphone coming almost six months after the company releases its latest flagship. And that’s what’s happened with the OnePlus 8T. This time around, the OnePlus 8T arrives alone. There's no Pro version to succeed the OnePlus 8 Pro. The new OnePlus 8T phone features the same processor and much of the same tech that we saw in the OnePlus 8, but a larger battery, quad-camera setup, and improved screen tech ensure that there’s enough new here to satisfy those looking for the best OnePlus has to offer.

Price and availability
The OnePlus 8T will be released in the US and UK, you can pre-order now in both locations but the release date differs depending on where you live. Those in the US will receive the handset on October 23, while those in the UK can get the phone from October 20. As for the OnePlus 8T price, there’s a nice surprise as the phone costs less than the OnePlus 8. The 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage variant in the UK cost £549. That variant won't be available in the US. If you live in the US, you'll be able to buy a 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage variant that costs $749 or £649 in the UK. OnePlus 8T price in India is set at Rs 42,999 for the base 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant, while the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage option costs Rs 45,999. The phone will go on sale in the country from October 16th. OnePlus 8T comes in Aquamarine Green and Lunar Silver colors.
Design and display
The OnePlus 8T is a definite shakeup in design for the company. While the OnePlus 7T had an iconic circular camera bump, the OnePlus 8T comes with a rectangular-shaped camera bump. The phone has a glass rear, which is protected by Gorilla Glass technology, and a metal frame. The design feels premium. It measures 160.7mm x 74.1mm x 8.4mm, and weighs 188 grams. The USB-C port and SIM tray are on the bottom of the phone, along with a single speaker. The volume rocker is on the left-hand side, while the unlock button and silence slider are on the right. The vast majority of Android phones don’t feature this slider, so this is a distinct element of OnePlus devices, allowing you to switch between notification sounds, vibration, or complete silence. The OnePlus 8T has an in-display fingerprint scanner.
The big upgrades over the OnePlus 8 come in the display, battery, and charging tech. For the display, the OnePlus 8T has a 6.55-inch, 120Hz refresh rate, FHD+ resolution AMOLED panel, up from the 90Hz panel on the OnePlus 8. OnePlus calls its 120Hz implementation “Dynamic Refresh” as the phone can lower the refresh rate when watching a video or when the content is static. The OnePlus 8T also has the Pixelworks i3 visual processor (formerly called “Iris 3”). It comes with DCI-P3 support, 8192 levels of luminance control, DC Dimming 2.0, calibrated flesh tone correction, and a “Tone Adaptive” color tone changing for reducing blue light.
Front and rear cameras
The front camera on the OnePlus 8T is the same 16MP sensor as on the OnePlus 8. The rear camera setup is where we see most of the changes, beyond the obvious design decisions. The primary camera is the 48MP shooter (same image sensor as on the OnePlus 8). The 16MP wide-angle camera has a change in the lens, with a 123° lens that gives this the largest field-of-view on any OnePlus smartphone yet. The third camera is now a 5MP macro camera (up from the 2MP macro camera on the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus Nord), and you now have a fourth camera which is a 2MP monochrome sensor to capture and record light information. In terms of camera features, OnePlus has improved low-light photography with an improved algorithm to detect the lighting condition and stack multiple photos for a brighter picture, added portrait bokeh, and added a video portrait mode.
Processor, software, and battery
The OnePlus 8T has a close-to top-tier chipset in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. This is one of the most powerful chips on the market, although some flagships use the slightly more recent Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is optimized for gaming. Why did OnePlus not go for the Snapdragon 865 Plus, though? OnePlus mentions that “the Snapdragon 865 is still very powerful, so opting for the Snapdragon 865 Plus would have brought only marginal improvements, and we agree.” The SoC is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM (the OnePlus 8 had LPDDR4X RAM while the OnePlus 8 Pro had LPDDR5), but you get an upgrade to UFS 3.1 for storage (both the OnePlus 8/8 Pro had UFS 3.0 storage). As with the other OnePlus 8 phones, the OnePlus 8T has 5G connectivity, enabling you to make the most of the next-gen internet connectivity. AnTuTu scores of the OnePlus 8T are 586000.
The OnePlus 8T comes with Android 11-based OxygenOS 11. That means you get most of the new features that the OxygenOS 11 update brings along, such as an Always On Display, Zen Mode 2.0, Dark Mode 2.0, and of course, all that Android 11 has to offer. Since this phone is launching with Android 11, expect to get updates to Android 12 and Android 13. The OnePlus 8T should also receive bi-monthly security updates until 3 years. The OnePlus 8T is the company’s first handset with 65W wired charging support. The company calls this Warp Charge 65, and it provides super quick wired charging through the included, proprietary charging brick. The company claims that “you just need 15 minutes of charging for a day’s worth of power, and just 39 minutes of charging for a complete 0-100% cycle.” The OnePlus 8T has a 4,500mAh battery, which is bigger than the 4,300mAh battery in the OnePlus 8 (the 8 Pros is a fraction bigger at 4,510mAh), and the improvement is noticeable.
For heat dissipation, the OnePlus 8T makes use of three methods together. There is an L-shaped vapor chamber soaking plate sitting above the battery compartment. Then, there is thermally conductive silicone grease spread over high-heat segments of the motherboard (such as the CPU, modem-RF components, etc.) to help with thermal conductivity. A single layer of graphite 70μm thick also sits atop the heat sink. The result of all of this should be that the device stays cool even in demanding situations. OnePlus also claims that as the phone comes with heat dissipation, so, the battery longevity of the OnePlus 8T should not be affected by Warp Charge 65.
