Storage memory
Description
A cell phone these days isn’t just a device that is used to make phone calls and send text messages but it’s more than that. It’s like keeping a cell phone, music player, radio, camera, and camcorder and internet browser in your pocket. When a cell phone is equipped with such huge list of features and apps, it needs a storage space for keeping all the files and necessary elements to run so many tools and apps. The storage space in a cell phone is known as the memory of a cell phone.
A decade back when cell phones were newly introduced in the market for common consumers, it was supposed to be the latest cell phone if it had up to 1MB of storage memory but then as time passed, we saw higher and higher needs of data storage on the cell phones and as the necessity is the mother of invention, manufacturers introduced memory chips with higher storage capacities up to 128MB.
Then a revolution came that made the cell phone more than just an equipment to make calls and send text messages. When the cell phones were installed with more features i.e. media and camera, it required more space to store photos, songs, videos and other files. That’s when memory cards with higher storage capacities were introduced in the market and from that time it’s just going higher and higher with each passing day as it’s very common to have a memory of 128GB in a cell phone these days but still it’s not enough and needs to go further up.
Types of storage memory
When we talk about the storage memory of a cell phone, it’s usually has two basic types; internal and external.
Storage
Internal memory
Internal memory of a cell phone refers to the available storage capacity of a cell phone which is included in the software or hardware of the cell phone itself. This frees the user to insert any additional or external storage devices into the cell phone. These days, most of the high class cell phones come with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB of internal memory features.
External memory
External memory refers to the chips that are put in the cell phone externally and these chips have the storage capacity for keeping the files in the cell phone safe. A few years back, huge sized SD cards were used for this purpose and at that time 128MB was the highest memory available on a SD card. But unlike that, these days we use micro SD cards which are even smaller and slimmer than a SIM card and the highest storage capacity of a micro SD card these days is more than 128GB.
RAM
RAM:
RAM stands for Random Access Memory and it’s the memory or temporary storage capacity of a cell phone and it determines the speed of the cell phone. A cell phone with bigger RAM memory can work in a quick way and it will respond to the commands very faster. Higher RAM memory also helps the device to open and run more than one tools or apps simultaneously without freezing the device. Types of RAM: There are three basic types of RAM and the differentiation depends on the travelling speed inside the RAM.
DDR1 RAM:
It stands for Double Data Rate RAM and it’s very obvious that it transfers and handles twice as data as previous SDR versions of RAM. DDR1 200MHz can transfer up to 1600MB/sec where DDR1 400 MHz can transfer up to 3200MB/sec.
DDR2 RAM:
It stands for Double Data Rate 2 RAM and it has twice the speed as compared to previous DDR1 version of RAM. It ranges between 400 MHz to 800 MHz and the DDR2 400MHz Ram can transfer data up to 3200MB/sec where the 800MHz version can transfer data up to 6400MB/sec.
DDR3 RAM:
It stands for Double Data Rate 3 RAM and it has the speed twice as compared to DDR2 Ram and three times faster as compared to DDR1 Ram. It ranges from 800MHz to 1600MHz. DDR3 Ram with 800MHz version can transfer data up to 6400MB/sec where the latest version with 1600MHz can transfer data up to 12800MB/sec. This is the latest and fastest RAM that is available in the market for smart phones.
