iPhone 12 Series Hands-on Review

Last Update 2020-10-13 00:00:00 Views 4191

The wait is over and the Cupertino Apple has unveiled four iPhone models. The regular iPhone 12 and 12 Pro came with 6.1 inches screens, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max stretches up to 6.7 inches. With the iPhone 12 Mini, I am feeling confident when holding a 5.4 inches screen. (It’s remembering me traditional smaller iPhones.)

I am glad to see new 5G iPhones. Some other highlights of iPhone 12 series are LiDar camera system, newer iOS 14, and the fastest Apple A14 chipset (built on 5nm node).

iPhone 12 Series Pre-order and Release Date

The Preorders for iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are starting on 16th October, after three days of 13th October virtual launch. The first shipment and iPhone12 duo release will start on 23rd October. However, the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available on pre-order in early November 2020. The mini and max will being shipped in mid-November (so you have to wait a little more, if planned a purchase).

The first destinations of iPhone 12 series are US, Europe, and Middle East (UAE). Following on, new iPhones will make arrival to Africa and Asia regions (India first).

iPhone 12 Series Prices

The iPhone 12 Mini (64GB) costs you $699. That’s a good start with the A14 performance and iOS 14 out of the box. The iPhone 12 (64GB) and iPhone 12 Pro (128GB) are available for $799 and $999, respectively. Meanwhile, the Price of iPhone 12 Pro Max is $1,099 for the base model and 512GB variant goes up to $1,300.

Apparently, there is a little fluctuation in iPhone 12 Series Prices. But that’s not right. Apple has removed EarPods in the phone’s box, and now you have to buy a new set of Wireless EarPods, separately.

Look

I am choosing newer color option Matte Blue (a match for my Watch Series 6). Other iPhone 12 series color variants are also handsome – Matte Space Gray, Matte Silver, Matte Gold, and Matte Midnight

Except being thinner (7.1 mm dimension), the iPhone 12 series looks identical to the iPhone 11 family i.e. notched display and square camera matrix. There are dual back cameras for iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, whereas the other two iPhones (Pro and Max) carry a triple rear camera setup and a LiDAR sensor.

Apple used to fabricate Aluminum frame for iPhone 12 and Mini. However, the iPhone 12 Pro and Max crafted with Stainless Steel (looks premium). There is a Gorilla Glass on both front and back. iPhone 12 series gets IP68 water resistant rating. It means that you can continue using iPhone 12 while raining.

Neither Mini nor other iPhones are getting Touch ID (as the iPhone SE had earlier this year). But you can trust on 3D Face Unlock, which registers more facial points and thus providing iPhone 12 users a more secure, faster unlock.

Display and Software

iPhone 12 and Mini are getting Super Retina OLED Displays (manufactured by BOE), whereas the iPhone 12 Pro and Max have Super Retina XDR OLED Displays (made by Samsung). The later ones deliver a better watching experience. Resolution is HD+ for regular and mini versions, while FHD+ for pro and max. All of them offer Dolby Vision support.

Coming toward software, the entire iPhone 12 family is running iOS 14. There is a redesigned, compact user interface with a bunch of new features i.e. App Library, pre-installed Memoji keyboard, Hidden Album (for photos), Picture-in-Picture mode for YouTube, Fake Eye Contact for Facetime, Back Tap, Car Play, App Clips, Quick toggles in Camera video mode, updated Safari, and Smart Stack.

Camera and LiDAR technology

Every iPhone 12 model is getting dual front cams. The first is a 12MP wide-angle lens and secondary is a SL 3D sensor for Face ID and Animoji. You can create 4k video calls and enjoy 1080p Slow-mo at 120fps. Luckily, EIS is available.

For photographers, iPhone 12 and Mini are giving two 12MP back cameras (wide + ultra) while the iPhone 12 Pro and Max are offering three 12MP optics (wide + ultra + telephoto). Pro and Max brought an extra LiDAR sensor that improves Augment Reality models and boosts 3D sensing of smartphone.

iPhone 12 series enables OIS and EIS. With the main camera, you can record 4k movies at 60fps and 1080p Slow-mo at 240fps.

Performance and Memory

The whole iPhone 12 family comes with Apple A14 processor, which is developed on 5nm architecture that promises 15% performance increase and 30% power reduction (in comparison to 7nm chip in the predecessor iPhones). Also, A14 focuses on artificial intelligence and AR tasks.

According to Geekbench v5.2.3, Apple A14 obtained 1,583 scores and 4,198 scores respectively in single and multi core performance test.

For gaming lovers, Apple integrated a 6GB RAM in iPhone 12 Pro and Max. Therefore, you can play PUBG, Fortnite, or other heavy mobile games even smoother. The minimum RAM capacity is 4GB (sufficient) for iPhone 12 and Mini – that cuts the price too.

You have more options when it comes to storage. iPhone 12 and Mini follows such configuration 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Meanwhile, iPhone 12 Pro and Max are available in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB memory variant.

Battery and Connectivity

iPhone 12 and 12 Pro possess the same amount of battery, 2775 mAh. The iPhone 12 Mini houses a 2227 mAh and iPhone 12 Pro Max gets a 3687 mAh power cell. All of them support Fast Charge, and the 12 Pro and Max allow Wireless Charge too.

Speaking on 5G, you can enjoy the fastest network as of now on all iPhones – it can deliver up to 2GBps and more. Users can download HD movies within 3 seconds.
