Samsung Galaxy A80 Hands-on Review

Last Update 2019-04-13

Samsung makes history with the launch of Galaxy A80 - the world’s first pop-up and rotating camera phone. It’s not a gimmick, but intelligent engineering behind the swivel cams secret. Galaxy A80 surprises us with a new path tracked by Samsung, as it is the first time when the Korean mobile brand ditches microSD slot and 3.5 mm socket for A class. We calculated Samsung is ready to adopt changes, and now it is bringing them to their A series mid-end flagship products same as the Apple does with its premium iPhones.

Body and Display

The Galaxy A80 gets significant updates, and we have much to say on. Design shows R&D hard work, and the consumers won’t face any notch or cutout or a hole-punch for selfie lens which interrupts the screen, there’s instead a full view display fully bezel-less and flat, not curved edges like Galaxy S10 family. Samsung A80 can clash on Galaxy S10 for its bigger size, 165.2mm height, 76.5 breadth, but 9.3 mm thickness unlike standard phone thickness, which makes one-hand usage difficult.

Samsung device assembles in the aluminum frame and dual-sided glass on the front and back, which shows the body only strong and won’t get scratched, but what you say about glass which feels slippery while hands-on. If the device falls suddenly, it may suffer severe damages because the A80 is not a MIL complaint, and even doesn’t possess IP6X rating for dust and water resistant, so be careful and don’t let it experience splashes. A protective case can help you from going it into hell under those circumstances.

We are happy to see such a sizeable 6.7inches infinity display of Super AMOLED type, thankfully not LCD one for this exclusive device. Users can watch Netflix, browse web pages, and read Amazon books on 20:9 full cinema screen, but the 1080x2400 pixels resolution for outdoors is a bit disappointing at 393 PPI Density.

Samsung knows its user's concerns for privacy and security; therefore, it brings the more advanced In-Display Fingerprint Sensing technology that is faster and more reliable than earlier physical FR.

Galaxy A80 has a good collection of colorful dresses Angel Gold, Ghost White, and Phantom Black. We feel charmed for Gold variant.

A camera setup that Pops Up and Rotates

When we have a first look at the Samsung A80, there’s no selfie lens but three photography sensors, after opening the camera interface and hitting front cam icon those triple rear facing snappers slides up and turns into the front-facing selfie shooters. This mechanism is somewhat Samsung called Pop-up or lifting and Rotating. The most significant edge is that we can capture the rear camera selfies or in other words bring the photography results to the front.

The triple cam story begins with 48MP focal lens f/2.0 aperture and of course we are feeling the delight to compete the Huawei P30 Pro and Oppo Reno 10X Zoom with a qualified competitor in less price range. Group selfies and landscapes can easily fit into the 8MP ultrawide lens, and also lets the device capture perfect blurred images via a 3D Time of Flight sensor. You can unblur those shots even after shooting.

Turn on Night mode and takes the best low-light shots at higher resolution, and also changes color effects app supported, and adds more color tones via LED flash.

Samsung Galaxy A80 is capable of recording 4k videos and FHD streams at 30fps, and Samsung is proud of it to bring the 4k video calling experience to you, thanks to sliding innovations.

Software

Out of the retail package, Samsung A80 comes up with OneUI skin on top of Android OS v9.0 Pie to give you the same software experience as with the top-tier Samsung S10. Night mode and quick toggles are fun to use, and thanks gosh interface is not polishing apps much, that look aggressive if oversaturated.

Hardware

The Galaxy A80 sets another record of becoming the first to get Snapdragon 730; an 8nm Qualcomm chipset tucked beside a Kryo 460 Octa processor, where two Gold cores run at 2.2GHz frequency while Six Silver cores clocked at the 1.7GHz rate. The handset is superb for its steady, smooth performance, and we have luckily benchmarking reports to offer you for calculating overall efficiency.

Samsung Galaxy A80 achieved 207,082 AnTuTu scores for total performance, whereas 2488 and 6732 scores obtained respectively for single and multi core Geekbench tests. These marks pull off the A80 above the average phones line.

Graphics are vibrant enough for Asphalt Nitro 8 under the inspection of Adreno 618 GPU, and users can boost multitasking and gaming fun with an 8GB RAM of the latest DDR4 generation.

It is aggressive for those with large files stock need to keep an eye on 128GB storage space because A80 lacks microSD slot, and further A80 has not another ROM variant. Thus they have no option to upgrade memory.

Battery and 25W Fast Charge

How Samsung forgot to keep up battery life? The Galaxy A80 houses a lower 3,700 mAh battery by Li-Po, and it is a non-removable one. Samsung satisfies by excusing user can recharge their device quickly with supplied 25W Fast Charge and half an hour is sufficient to get the power for a day of multimedia. USB Type C hub is available to sync whether current or data.
