Introduction

The Oppo Reno4 and Reno4 Pro are the newest members in Oppo’s premium mid-range Reno series. The two smartphones are the successor of Reno 3 series, which was launched last December in China and later in India. The all-new OPPO Reno4 series comes with the same 5G chipset and punch-hole display as its predecessor. The handsets have a new ‘Reno Glow’ design, which is claimed to be resistant to scratches. The rear cameras of both Reno4 and Reno4 Pro have been downgraded to triple cameras instead of quad. Other key highlights include a curved screen, in-display fingerprint scanner, up to 12GB of RAM, and 65W fast charging tech. Alongside Reno4 series, the company also announced its smart band with a 1.1-inch AMOLED screen. Oppo’s smart band supports 12 activities and you also get access to music control, smart notifications, and even spO2 blood level monitor, and NFC for payments.

Price and availability

The Reno4 starts at CNY 2,999 ($423) for the 8+128GB variant and the 8+256GB costs CNY 3,299 ($465). The Reno4 Pro with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at CNY 3,799 ($536) and the 12+256GB variant costs CNY 4,299 ($606). The Reno 4 series will go on sale from next week in China. On the other hand, the Oppo Band is priced at CNY 199 (Rs 2,100) and CNY 249 (Rs 2,700) for the special edition.

Design and display

The OPPO Reno4 Pro is the real star of the series featuring a curved AMOLED display upfront and 3D curved back. The standard Reno4 has a simple, flat AMOLED panel. Both the phones have triple cameras at the back (but the Pro variant packs a more powerful setup). The Reno4 is available in three color options: Crystal Diamond Blue, Dream Mirror Black, and Taro Purple. The Reno4 Pro comes in five color options: Crystal Diamond Blue, Crystal Diamond Red, Dream Mirror Black, Titanium, and Midsummer Fluorescence.

The standard Reno4 weights 183 grams and measures 7.8mm in thickness. However, the Reno4 Pro has an even slimmer 7.6mm body, weighing just 172 grams. This makes the Pro model, one of the lightest 5G smartphones in the market. As for the display sizes, the Reno4 arrives with a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel while the Reno4 Pro has a much better 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, 180Hz touch sampling rate, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, HDR10+ and low Blue Light certification.

Front and rear cameras

Cameras are the big highlight of the two smartphones. The OPPO Reno4 comes with a 48MP IMX586 f/1.7 primary camera that’s paired with an 8MP 119-degree ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 2MP black and white sensor. The Reno4 Pro, on the other hand, has the same primary 48MP IMX586 camera but has OIS. The second sensor is a 12MP IMX708 1.4μm 120-degree ultra-wide-angle f/2.2 shooter and a 13MP f/2.4 telephoto sensor with 5x optical zoom and 20x digital zoom support. They both have a laser focus sensor and OPPO’s ultra-clear low light algorithm. The new night algorithm enables clear and colorful night videos. They also have OPPO’s Video Anti-Shake 3.0 technology when using the ultra-wide-angle sensor as well as front camera video stabilization.

The Reno4 and Reno4 Pro have a live HDR video mode and 21:9 custom movie shooting mode with manual parameter adjustment options which the company claims “provide a more professional shooting experience.” Both phones support up to 4K 30fps and up to 720p 240fps slo-mo video shooting from its rear cameras. The front cameras are also capable of 1080p 30fps videography. The Reno4 has a dual punch-hole front camera setup including a 32MP primary camera and a 2MP secondary one. The Reno4 Pro comes with a single 32MP front selfie shooter. Both devices have front video stabilization (software) and AI Smart Beauty ‘face repair’ algorithm that enhances clarity and fixes blurry faces.

Software, processor, and battery

Powering the Reno4 series is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset with Adreno 620 GPU. It comes with 5G network support too. Oppo Reno4 has just 8GB of RAM with 128GB and 256GB storage options, but the Reno4 Pro includes a top-end 12GB RAM and 256GB ROM variant too. They also feature a graphite cooling system that keeps the temperature under control during intensive gaming sessions.

Additionally, you get an intelligent power-saving mode. Both the phones have a 4000mAh battery with 65W SuperVOOC fast charging. This fills up the battery to 60 percent in just 15 minutes and 100 percent in just 36 minutes. Both phones come with ColorOS 7.2 pre-installed. ColorOS 7.2 adds the super night scene video function, self-developed moonlight night scene video algorithm, and many more. The overall brightness of the video screen is effectively increased by 74 percent, and the screen clarity is improved by 33 percent.
