Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G Hands-on Review

The much-awaited Samsung Foldable Smartphone has arrived at the Unpacked Event (August 5), the Galaxy Z Fold2. It is a successor toward Galaxy Fold, and at the same time, it splits the Z series between Z Flip and Z Fold. The Z Flip is a vertical upward folding phone while Z Fold2 bends like a book (horizontally). Let’s see what’s new in Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2.

Galaxy Fold Vs Z Fold2:

The main differences between Galaxy Fold and Z Fold2 are screen size, chipset family, optics, memory, and battery capacity. Z Fold2 has a 7.6inches foldable AMOLED touchscreen, SD865+ SoC, Five Cameras, 256GB Storage, and 4500mAh power cell. On the other hand, the predecessor Galaxy Fold had 7.3inches foldable AMOLED screen, SD855 processor, Six Cams, 512GB Storage, and 4380mAh powerhouse. Another big difference is 5G connectivity for Z Fold2, whereas the Samsung Fold supports only 4G LTE.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G Pre-order and Price

Samsung is letting the users preorder a Z Fold2 from August 6. The Price of Galaxy Z Fold2 5G is $2,000, however, the Galaxy Fold had priced at $2,300 at the moment of launch. There is a price concession, yet it is still expensive as compared to Galaxy Z Flip, which was a debut with a price label of $1,300.

The shipment for Galaxy Z Fold2 will start in early September 2020.

 

Body

Galaxy Z Fold2 looks identical to the predecessor i.e. a smartphone when folded and a tablet while unfolded. It has a plastic front and glass back. The handset made of the aluminum frame. Z Fold2 weighs in at 279 grams, a little heavier than Galaxy Fold of 263 grams. There are dual screens, a primary front and cover display joined with a hinge. The secondary display is 6.23inches in size, larger than 4.6inches cover display of Samsung Fold. Fingerprint Scanner is at the same position, side-mounted.

You can choose Galaxy Z Fold2 in two body colors, Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black.

Display

Z Fold2 brings a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED Foldable Display and 1768x2208 pixels resolution. The foldable smartphone achieves a 90% screen-to-body ratio and supports HDR10+. Luckily, the display runs at a 120Hz refresh rate to let you enjoy a smoother watching experience. It provides up to 500nits of brightness, good contrast, and color saturation. Beware, the Plastic Front of Galaxy Z Fold 2 protected by a thin layer of tempered glass, not a standard Corning glass. So you should take care of this.

 

Software

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 boots OneUI 2.1 and comes with pre-installed Android 10 OS. The latest One UI 2.1 focused on Camera and brings Night Hyperlapse, Quick Share, Single take, PRO video mode, Zoom Controls, AR Zone, and New Quick-Crop. Some highlights of Android 10 are new Dark Themes, incognito mode for Google Maps, Smart Reply, optimized location, Focus mode, new parental control, and privacy tools.

Camera

There are three photography cameras and two selfie shooters. The main sensors configuration is as follows 12MP f/1.8 wide, 12MP f/2.4 telephoto with 2x optical zoom, and 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide with a 120-degree field of view. Galaxy Z Fold 2 enables Electronic and Optical Image Stabilization. For low-light conditions, there is a dual-tone LED flash and Night Hyperlapse mode. The device is eligible for 4k film recording at 60fps, Full HD videos at 240fps, and HD Super Slow-mo at 960fps.

On the front, Samsung Z Fold2 features two 10MP wide-angle lenses that can shoot 4k selfies and FHD video calls. The front camera also supports EIS.

Hardware

Powered by Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, Galaxy Z Fold2 achieved 515,090 scores in the AnTuTu benchmark. An Octa-core CPU is ticking at a 3.09GHz clock rate for faster task execution. There’s besides Adreno 650 graphics card for perfect animations. Either it is PUBG or Fortnite, the user can install heavy games in whopping 12GB RAM. Storage is 256GB UFS 3.1 rather than 3.0, and hence it proceeds data faster. Unfortunately, there is neither a card slot nor another memory variant.

 

Battery Life

Galaxy Z Fold 2 can last a single day, thanks to a 4,500 mAh li-polymer battery. The foldable phone allows 25 watts Fast Weird Charge and 15 watts Fast Wireless Charge. Also, it is capable of 9 watts reverse wireless charging.

 

The other features of Samsung Fold 2 are AKG tuned Audio, WiFi Sub-6, Bluetooth v5.1, NFC, and latest USB Type C version 3.1 (reversible connector).
