LG K61, K51s, and K41s hands-on review and differences

Last Update 2020-02-27

Introduction

If you're looking for decently affordable LG phones, it's always worth considering a K-series device, the company's mid-range offerings, and the company has just unveiled three new handsets with quad-rear cameras and 4,000 mAh battery. In the 2020 K Series, there's the LG K61 leading the way in the specs contest followed by the LG K51S and then the LG 41S. The company has said that the phones are expected to be available sometime in the second quarter of this year. The first market to receive these handsets is going to be the US, followed by key markets in Europe and Asia. The LG K61 is listed to come in Titanium, White, and Blue color options; the LG K51S will arrive in Titanium, Pink, and Blue options, whereas the LG K41S will go on sale in Titanium, Black, and White color options. The LG K61 costs $400 for base model (4GB RAM + 64GB). You can buy the LG K51s at $300 while the K41s at $250 price.

LG K61, K51s, and k41s design and display

The LG K61 and K51s have punch-hole on the front panel for selfie sensor, while the affordable LG K41s brings a water-drop notch. The back panels' trio of phones is looking the same with fingerprint sensor and horizontal shaped quad camera setup. All three devices have a power button on the right bezel while the Google Assistant button and volume keys on the left bezel. In terms of dimensions, the premium variant – K61 measures 164.5 x 77.5 x 8.4 mm, the K51s measures 165.2 x 76.7 x 8.2 mm, and the most affordable variant – K41s measures 165.7 x 76.4 x 8.2 mm. The phones also come MIL-STD 810G compliant. Additionally, these pack USB Type-C port and have a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

All three of the new LG K phones have a 6.5-inch display, but they're not all identical. The K61 has an FHD+ display, while the others are just HD+, and the last two phones are both 20:9 aspect ratio, unlike the 19.5:9 of the K61, so will be slightly longer and thinner. As for screen to body ratio, the LG K61 provides 81.4 percent, while the other two models support 80.6 percent screen-to-body ratio.

LG K61, K51s, and K41s front and rear cameras

The real draw to these budget smartphones is the fact you're getting a four-camera rear array. A trio of phones has a quad-camera setup on the back side, but lenses are different. LG K61 houses a 48MP primary sensor with high resolution joined by 8MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro, and 5MP depth-sensing cameras. The LG K51S has a 32MP primary, 5MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro, and 2MP depth-sensing snapper. On the other hand, the K41s supports a 13MP primary sensor, a 5MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front of the phones are 16MP, 13MP, and 8MP front-facing snappers, respectively. The company claims, the LG K61 allows recording 4k videos as well as Full HD videos at 30fps, while the other two phones can record only Full HD videos at 30fps. You can also record Full HD videos at 30fps by using the front cameras.

While we're dubious at the usefulness of all of these cameras, as we've yet to find a depth-sensing camera that's really that useful, four cameras is still an impressive collection for phones that will likely have low price tags. These cameras are arranged in a horizontal bar along the rear of the phone, and the smartphones look somewhat like the Samsung Galaxy S10 range as a result. Despite having four rear cameras, these new LG phones probably won't have all the photography smarts of new heavyweights out now, and won't feel like a premium to use.

LG K61, K51s and K41s processor, battery and software

On the software front, all three new LG phones run the Android 10 operating system, which provides many new features such as Dark mode, ultra-game mode, and super screen recorder. Under the hood, a trio of the phone is powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC constructed on a 12nm octa-core processor (core 2.3 GHz Cortex-A53). There are PowerVR GE8320 GPUs. The battery on all three phones is 4,000mAh, and thanks to the relatively low screen resolutions as well as this size, the handsets will likely last two days before you need to power them up. The LG K61 has 4GB of RAM with 64/128GB ROM, the K51s offers 3GB of RAM with 64GB ROM, and the K41s comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB onboard storage.
