ZTE Axon 11 5G hands-on review

Chinese tech giant ZTE has joined 5G class by launching its first 5G phone today (23-March) with quad rear camera setup and curved AMOLED display. The ZTE Axon 11 5G is a premium mid-range phone fuelled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC that brings support dual-mode 5G networks. The smartphone features exceptional 5G performance, elegant design, powerful video shooting, and editing functions. In the future, we will make great efforts in the following two aspects: communications capabilities and video algorithm, aiming to provide consumers with competitive 5G terminal products.” The ZTE Axon 11 5G smartphone comes in Laser Black and Pearl White colors. The base model with 6 GB RAM is priced at 2,698 yuan ($379) and goes up to 3,398 yuan ($477) for the top-end variant.

Design and display

In terms of appearance, ZTE Axon 11 5G maintains the thinness and elegant design as usual. It flaunts a 6.47-inch flexible AMOLED curved waterdrop display, providing an 87.9 percent screen-to-body ratio. The 3D quad curved glass brings beautiful and thinner optical effects. The perfect size can fit in the user’s palm and smooth hand feeling. The side of this smartphone adopts unique skateboard-shaped design, while the top and bottom use G3 level curves, making the overall body 360-degree integration, providing a better sense of holding this smartphone with a horizontal screen. The extremely slim body design makes the ZTE Axon 11 only 7.9mm thick. Indeed, it is the best lightest 5G smartphone from the brand, with a bodyweight of only 168g. More, the AMOLED display of the phone provides a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels at 398 PPI density. There is an under-display fingerprint sensor for authentication.

Front and Rear cameras

ZTE Axon 11 5G can shoot the 4K high-resolution videos at 60fps, by virtue of its AI quad shooting system which is composed of a 64MP (f/1.9 aperture) super HD primary camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera up to 120 degrees, a dedicated 2MP macro camera and a professional depth of field camera.

On the front panel, it has a 20MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture for selfie experience. The selfie shooter can record Full HD videos at 30fps. ZTE claims, “With the high bandwidth and low latency in the 5G era, hundreds of 4K HD videos can be uploaded without compression, so that you can record, present, and share those special moments in users’ life anytime and anywhere.”

Software, Processor, and battery

ZTE Axon 11 5G is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G Chipset constructed on a 7nm Octa-core processor (1x2.4 GHz Kryo 475 Prime & 1x2.2 GHz Kryo 475 Gold & 6x1.8 GHz Kryo 475 Silver) and provides ultimate 5G experience. The phone is compatible with both SA and NSA modes, allowing the multi-channel concurrency in Wi-Fi and cellular networks (4G/5G). It can not only easily deal with the complex signal environment, but also achieve 5G full frequency band, full Netcom, and further accelerate the speed of the superimposed network. Along with ZTE’s intelligent network acceleration technology Link-Booster, ZTE Axon 11 5G allows the seamlessly switching from Wi-Fi to the cellular network by automatically analyzing use scenario and network conditions and boosts downloading speed by simultaneously adopting both networks. The switching speed can be improved by 50 percent.

Furthermore, ZTE Axon 11 5G has the new-generation full-scene system optimization engine Z-Booster 2.0, which intelligently allocates system resources through AI algorithms, thereby optimizing the dimensions that affect user experiences such as APP startup, system operation, network switching, and multiple different scenarios. The Z-Booster 2.0 has functional modules, including App-Booster, System-Booster covering the RAM-Booster, FS-Booster, Power-Booster, and Link-Booster, respectively making apps start faster, performing more efficiently and providing better internet and communication experience. There is an Adreno 620 GPU. As for the software, the smartphone runs the Android 10 operating system, which is skinned with MiFavor 10 layer. Under the hood, ZTE Axon 11 5G smartphone packs a 4,000 mAh battery that supports up to 18W for quick charging. The internal temperature of the phone is well-maintained, thanks to the presence of liquid cooling technology.
