The Samsung Galaxy S8 may be the most expensive phone of 2017

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ:SSNLF) is charging too much for user experience. Prices for the upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus recently leaked ahead of the company’s official unveiling of the phones at the end of this month, and both handsets will be very expensive.

With each passing year, smartphones are getting much elegant, big, and powerful, but they are also getting more expensive. Customers see the prices of the premium flagships rise up about $100 every year, and 2017 is not going to be any different.

Roland Quandt of MobileGeeks.de webpage has leaked information from a reliable source saying the S8 and S8 Plus will cost around €799 in the UK (about $843), and €899 (around $948) in Europe.

British retailer MobileFun is already taking pre-orders for both devices and a wide range of accessories of the handsets. Customers are paying about £799 for the Galaxy S8 ($972) and £899 for the S8 Plus ($1,094).

How much will it cost in the US?

There is no information for the U.S. pricings yet, but customers and retailers can assume the entry level will be around $800.

According to the sources of Roland Quandt, the expected price for the US would be somewhere between $799 and $850 for the Galaxy S8, while the S8 Plus should have a price tag in between $899 to $899.

If the information is true, the S8 series will become the most expensive smartphones of the year, but the iPhone 7s will most likely take that place, and especially the iPhone 8 and the upcoming Google Pixel 2, both rumored to start at $1000.

What do we know so far?

Samsung will officially announce the S8 lineup at an event in New York City on March 29, and the smartphones will be shipping out the first week of April.

Both the S8 and the S8 plus will have larger, edge-to-edge “Infinity Displays”. An Infinity Display is a new trademark from Samsung that refers to Super AMOLED screens with a nearly bezel-less design. The trademark first surfaced in January and is going to make a debut in the upcoming flagship smartphones.

The South Korean company is expected to overhaul the design of the S series for a 2017 refresh. The S8 is probably ditching the home button, and the new design features will reduce the size of its bezels to make room for the larger display.

Recent leaks say the display will measure 5.7-inches, as big as the latest Galaxy Note smartphone. The screen will leave just enough space for the speaker, a front-facing camera, and an iris scanner on the top edge of the handset.

British media The Guardian claimed the Galaxy S8 series will bring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 processor, alongside 4GB of RAM, 128GB storage, and improve camera setups.

Rumors say it may be the first Galaxy S device compatible with an S Pen, although the pen will remain as an extra accessory.
