In its quest to push for 5G, Qualcomm is reportedly selling its flagship processor (Snapdragon 865) at a higher price than usual. Despite Samsung and other phone manufacturers launching smartphones with the 865 SoC, Google and LG are not following suit and are rumored to skip the high-end processor this year and go for the cheaper Snapdragon 765G (ArsTechnica reported). The Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL would not actually use Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 865 as per the Android codebase. Both are running the Snapdragon 765G, a chip that's one step down from the Qualcomm’s SDM 865 flagship SoC.
The South Korean tech giant LG is taking a similar approach to its upcoming smartphone, the LG G9 ThinQ; instead of using the Snapdragon 865, the company is also opting for the cheaper 765G, according to the source. HMD Global’s Nokia 8.3 5G launched earlier with the 765G, and it is the first smartphone compatible with global 5G bands. In terms of the configuration, the Snapdragon 765G isn’t as fast as the flagship SD 865. It features two Cortex-A76 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores. While the Snapdragon 865 uses four A77 cores and four A55 cores. However, the difference shouldn’t be too noticeable with the right software optimization in place.
