Description

When mobiles phones were introduced in the market for the first time, it was nothing much different from a landline phone except there were no cords or wires. Those earliest models of mobile phones didn’t have any displays but now we can see that the most important and noticeable feature of a smart phone is the display. Display is the screen or monitor on the body of the smart phones that shows us the functions in the real time as we operate the handset. As the technology is improving every day, we see different types of displays in various manufacturers and below, we have enlisted all the types of displays for your convenience.

TFT LCD: 

TFT stands for Thin Film Transistors and it’s the first form of modern LCD that made us familiar with different types of high resolution displays. For quite some time, every mobile included TFT LCD but it has the disadvantage of consuming more power and that’s why it was shortly rejected because it kept draining the battery of the smart phone after few hours of operations. 

IPS LCD: 

IPS stands for In Place Switching and its better type of LCD as compared to TFT. It consumes less power and provides larger angle of display for more than one viewer. It is expensive as compared to TFT and that’s why only high quality brands i.e. Apple uses this type of LCD in their smart phones.

Capacitive touch screen LCD: 

Capacitive touch screens are much better that the resistive touch screens as we talk about the human touch function on the touch screen. It includes a layer of glass coated with transparent conductor. When we touch it, it changes the capacitance on that point of the screen and that change is measured by the processor in the phone. This is an expensive type of LCD and it’s only used in high quality mobile phones.

OLED:

OLED stand for Organic Light Emitting Diode and it’s the next form of LCD but it’s much better as compared to any type of LCD because it produces exceptional colors, it has much lesser response time, it provides wider viewing angle, it has more brightness and sharpness in the displayed images and it’s very 

light weight. 

AMOLED: 

AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode which is better than the previous version of OLED. As compared to the traditional OLED, it includes both the former features of OLED and additional features of AMOLED. Only a few of the handsets include this type of display as its way expensive as compared to TFT displays. 

Super AMOLED display:

It is very obvious from the title that it’s the more advanced form of AMOLED displays and as it’s way expensive as most of the other types of LCDs and even AMOLED, only a few of the handsets are equipped with this type of display. The most important feature of this display is that the sensors are included on the touch screen itself and that helps to create a much thinner LCD which is both light weight and consumes very less power. 

Retina display 

This is the display that was used in iphone 4 by Apple and this is one of the latest and highest qualities of displays among all. The key feature of this display is the pixel density and the pixels are so tiny that human eye can’t identify them individually unlike any previous type of display. As the result, the image on this display is much sharper and brighter as compared to AMOLED or even super AMOLED.

PPI

The pixel density in a display LCD defines the quality of it. The higher the pixel density is, the higher the display quality of the LCD gets. In simple words, pixel density is defined as the number of pixels per inch on the screen. The greater the PPI ratio of the screen, the better the result of that LCD will be. For example, we know that Samsung has just introduced Galaxy S7 in the market and it has the highest quality of display as it includes 577ppi ratio which means 577 pixels per inch on the LCD.

Resulation

Display dimension is actually the total number of pixels on each dimension on the LCD. It’s usually measured in height X width. For example we know that Sony Xperia Z5 Premium has the sharpest and brightest display of all time and that is possible due to the higher 2160 x 3840 pixels display resolution of this smart phone.

Multi touch

This is again very obvious from the title that this is a touch screen LCD that allows more than one touches on the screen at once. This means that if users are operating on a bigger LCD, they can work together at a time without creating any problem or confusion on the screen. This also allows multi touching on the screen to perform different activities i.e. pinching with two fingers on the screen to zoom out etc.

Protection

Scratch resistant protection

This is an additional feature that isn’t included in all the cell phones and usually only limited high class smart phones are equipped with this feature. It’s very common that we can’t keep our cell phone in hands all the time and eventually we have to put it in our pocket or somewhere else i.e. dashboard of a vehicle or coffee table at home. The thing is that when you put your cell phone in pocket, there are usually other items in your pocket i.e. keys, coins etc that could put scratches on the body and display glass of the cell phone. As compared to the display glass, the body of the cell phone i.e. outer rim, back cover etc have more resistance against potential scratches but glass itself is a very fragile thing and it’s so delicate that a slightly harder scratch could damage the LCD of a cell phone permanently. This is why it’s important that when you buy a cell phone for worth more than $500, it comes with some kind of protection against the scratches. This way the phone will not only resist the scratches from coins, keys and other metallic elements but also keep the phone newer without any scratches, bumps and marks. 

Resistive touch screen LCD

This is one of the two basic types of touch screen LCDs that are used these days. There is actually a thin layer or space between two layers of LCDs and when we press on the screen, these two layers meet at that point and processor in the mobile phone recognizes it. This is a cheap quality of touch screen and only used in low budget mobile phones.

Gorilla glass LCD:

Gorilla glass is not like a separate type of display but just an added quality in touch screen displays. This is a very tough kind of glass that allows the users to keep their smart phones safe from scratches, bumps, drops on floor and any other type of damage to the LCD. It started with gorilla glass 1 and now we are seeing Corning Gorilla Glass 3 in most of the smart phones.

We have mentioned the scratch resistance technology above in the content and it works in two ways. The body of the cell phone is made scratch resistance by applying special layers on it where the display itself has the ability to protect it from scratches and damages after falling from a height up to 3 meters. Latest smart phones are equipped with a special kind of glass that is the toughest among all and it’s so tough that you can see many people bumping the displays of their cell phones on metallic nails just to prove the strength of scratch resistance protective glass. This glass is also known as gorilla glass and it was introduced as gorilla glass 1 a few years back. Then we were introduced with gorilla glass 2 that was tougher and slimmer and finally corning gorilla glass 3 is here. It’s the toughest among all times and slimmest too.

Type
