Realme X50 Pro 5G hands-on review

Last Update 2020-02-27

Realme X50 Pro 5G is now official. Touted as India’s first 5G phone, the X50 Pro 5G packs a flurry of top-of-the-line internals, including the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 90Hz display, and 64-megapixel quad rear cameras. The most exciting feature is 5G support on the smartphone. The phone arrives with the company's custom Realme UI based on Android 10. Other highlights include stereo speakers, NFC, and Google Pay and vapor cooling system for keeping it cool during lengthily gaming sessions. The Realme will go on sale in Moss Green and Rust Red. Realme X50 Pro 5G costs $645 for the base 8GB+128GB model.

Display and Design of the X50 Pro 5G

Realme has taken a slightly different approach with the X50 Pro 5G. Upfront, it has thin bezels, a thin chin, and a double punch hole (like Galaxy S10 Plus). Like the Honor View 20, this punch-hole sits on the right side of the display. The rear glass on the X50 Pro 5G is matte and arrives in two colors. There’s the Moss Green, Rust Red color options. The colors are slightly muted when compared to outgoing models, and I think they make the phone feel more sophisticated.

On the left edge, you’ll find separate volume up and down buttons. On the right side, there is a colored power button. On the top, it resides a microphone. On the bottom, there’s a USB-C port, SIM card slot, microphone, and speaker. The buttons are clicky and tactile as they should be, and are positioned in just the right place for my hands. The X50 Pro 5G has a 6.44-inch FHD+ 90Hz Super AMOLED panel. There’s a 180Hz sample rate to help the touch screen feel more responsive. Realme claims “1000+ nits brightness”, “105% NTSC”, and “100% DCI-P3,” meaning that the X50 Pro 5G is out to compete with some of the best screens on smartphones in 2020.

Front and rear cameras

The X50 Pro 5G features a 32MP and 8MP cameras on the front. The primary sensor is an IMX616 with an 80-degree field of view. The second has a field of view of 105-degrees and features Realme’s Edge Deformity Correction function, which detects warping and corrects for it in software. The front cameras also support the Portrait mode on photos and videos. The Realme X50 Pro 5G has four cameras at the rear panel a 64-megapixel primary sensor with an aperture of f/1.8 that can offer 20x zoom capability, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and macro sensor with an aperture of f/2.3 and a field of view of 119 degrees, a 12-megapixel telephoto f/2.5 sensor, and a 2-megapixel black and white portrait sensor with an aperture of f/2.4.

The Realme X50 Pro 5G comes with camera features such as Portrait Distortion Correction, HyperText, Ultra 64MP Mode, Ultra NightScape, Super NightScape, Panoramic view, Expert mode, Tripod mode, Timelapse, Portrait mode, HDR, Ultra Wide mode, Ultra Macro mode, AI scene recognition, AI Beauty, Filter, Chroma Boost, Slow Motion, Bokeh Effect Control. The phone can record 4k videos at 30fps, as well as Full HD videos at 30/60fps. The Nightscape mode works like before - taking a couple of snaps with different exposure and stitch them together. And it works on all three cameras - main, ultrawide, and zoom. But it has a new Tripod mode - if you leave the phone on a tripod, it can shoot for as long as 50 seconds for some jaw-dropping shots.

Software, processor, and battery

On the hardware front, the X50 Pro has 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. We'll see LPDDR5 RAM on most Chinese flagships this year, and while I didn't notice any difference in day-to-day usage, it makes for great marketing. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Chipset constructed on 7nm+ Octa-core processor. The phone runs Android 10 OS skinned with Realme UI 1.0 layer. More interestingly, the phone comes with a Wi-Fi 6 modem, the first from Realme to do so. You also get Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, and dual-band GPS. Coming to the battery, the X50 Pro has a 4200mAh unit, but the interesting point here is that it comes with 65W fast charging. You also get a 65W charger in the box, and the phone is able to go from zero to 60% in under 20 minutes. That's incredible when you consider there's a 4200mAh battery under the hood, and it's great to see Realme bundling the 65W charger in the box.
