Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro News, Leaks, and Rumors Round-Up (Updated)

Last Update 2020-04-14

Update: Oneplus 8 launch has confirmed for April 14. It will be livestreamed on official Oneplus website, too at UTC 3 P.M.

Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro are one of the much-awaited flagship smartphones of 2020. The devices will go official in a couple of months, and thus leaks and rumors are flooding on the internet. The upcoming Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro will compete with the other best smartphones of 2020, like Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20+, Huawei P40, and P40 Pro. In this Oneplus 8 rumors roundup, we composed all the Oneplus 8 series talk and buzz in one place from 120Hz display to wireless charging capability.

Concept of Oneplus 8 Lite

For the last couple of years, Oneplus had been introducing two Oneplus smartphones of non-T-series in the first six months. The Chinese brand has built a reputation for marketing premium cell phones only. But this time around Oneplus is rumored to change its traditional route, and it may introduce three smartphones this year (2020), including a cheaper variant Oneplus 8 Lite.

Oneplus 8 Release Date

Rumor says Oneplus will announce Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro in early summers. The Chinese firm had unveiled Oneplus 7 and 7 Pro on May 14 last year. The pre-orders should start right after the official unveiling, whereas the shipment will take place later in May 2020. London, New York, and Beijing might be the first destinations of the Oneplus 8 family, just like Oneplus 7 series.

Oneplus 8 Price

Oneplus 7 and 7 Pro had retailed at $549 and $669 back in 2019. Being successors, we expected that Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro would cost a bit higher. Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro will set you back at $569 and $699 while the Oneplus 8 Lite price should be $350. The larger memory variants of Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro will cost thirty to fifty dollars over the abase model.

Oneplus 8 Design and Build

Some leaked schematics by True Tech revealed the Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro designs. The patent shows the Oneplus 7 notch turned into a hole-punch selfie lens positioned at the top-left corner of the screen. The significant change comes to Oneplus 8 Pro, removing the pop-up selfie mechanism and replacing two front cameras in a screen punch-hole (at top-left corner). Both have fully bezel-less front. The standard is said to have a Flat Screen while Pro with a curved Edge display.

Coming to the back, not too much changed over Oneplus 7 and 7 Pro despite the camera in numbers, Oneplus 8 has three lenses while Oneplus 8 Pro gets four cams (aligned vertically in the top rear center). The fourth camera on Pro version is a small dot with an LED flash next to the triple vertical cameras. No sign of physical Fingerprint Sensor hints toward an In-Display FR technology.

Let’s talk about Oneplus 8 Lite. Some Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) renders by Onleaks suggested that Oneplus 8 Lite will have a centered punch hole on a bezel-less screen, and there will be two back cameras positioned at the top-left corner. We did not spot any Fingerprint Sensor, which could mean either no sensor (only FaceID) or under-screen FR since this is a Lite version.

All of the Oneplus 8 smartphones will have a sturdy aluminum body and glass protection on both front and back. Corning Gorilla Glass 6 should use for Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro, where the Lite version will get equipped either Gorilla Glass 5 or 3. Oneplus 8 trio will be splash-proof, but not IP6X rated (for submersions). It’s not surprising, because all the Oneplus mobiles offer the same standard (no IP certificate).

Oneplus 8 Display

Pete Lau, CEO of Oneplus, shared on Twitter a side-by-side view of 60Hz and 120Hz fluid display. The post appeared on January 15, 2020 (a couple of months ahead of the Oneplus 8 announcement). It means Oneplus is working on 120Hz display for Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro, about which Pete Lau claimed to deliver smoothest and effortless scrolling experience in his tweet. As far as Oneplus 8 Lite concerned, it will get up to 90Hz display (not a 120Hz one).

Some rumors circulating on the internet claimed Oneplus 8's 120Hz display even to be better than the upcoming Samsung S20's 120Hz display, which will offer such a high refresh rate only at lower nits of brightness. At the same time, the Oneplus will deliver the 120Hz refresh rate at maximum brightness (for outdoors). A leaked shot of Oneplus 8 surfaced on Android Central disclosed the smartphone would let you switch between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz display refresh rate. This act will help you to maximize battery life.

Heading toward screen sizes, Oneplus 8 Lite is said to have a 6.4inches display while Oneplus 8 will measure 6.5inches in diagonal, and 8 Pro will adopt 6.7inches display. Some rumors guessed the Oneplus 8's display to shrink to 6.5inches (smaller than Oneplus 7 Pro’s 6.7inches screen). Display type should be OLED FHD+ for standard, OLED QHD+ for pro, while IPS LCD FHD+ might use for Lite. The other features include DCI-P3 coverage, HDR10+ compliant, an always-on screen.

Oneplus 8 Software

After defeating Samsung S20 in the display department, Oneplus 8 is ready to surpass Huawei P40 in terms of software. Trump put the ban on Huawei to license Android and Google Mobile Services, but not on Oneplus - that is a plus point for Oneplus again its competitor, especially in western markets like Europe and America. Whether it is a standard, pro, or lite, all of Oneplus 8 devices will boot Android 10 OS (yeah offering Google mobile services) customized with Oxygen OS 10.0.2 skin on top.

Oneplus 8 Internal Specs

Performance-wise, Oneplus 8 lineup is said to approach Galaxy S20 since both smartphones will power by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. But that’s not the case with Huawei P40 driven by Kirin 990 chipset. Let’s see the benchmark results of both SD865 and Kirin 990 for an early verdict.

Kirin 990 received 457,357 scores by AnTuTu benchmark for overall performance. However, Snapdragon 865 achieved 568,919 AnTuTu scores. Though these are not the exact phones' benchmarks, yet it gives a good idea about how close the Oneplus 8 and S20 would be, and how far the Oneplus 8 performance should be better than Huawei P40.

Oneplus 8 Pro will have Snapdragon 865 SoC too, but the Lite version is lacking it. Whispers are each Oneplus 8 model to support 5G connectivity. Hence, Tech Radar suggested the Oneplus 8 Lite may get a MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G processor (newly launched). When we searched for AnTuTu benchmark results, we were just surprised to see MediaTek 1000 scoring 511,363 and following the SD865 while beating the Kirin 990. In our opinion, you should take the Oneplus 8 Lite story with MediaTek 5G SoC with a pinch of salt - after all, these are rumors, not official info by an authentic source. Apart from this, Oneplus 8/8 Pro must be a 5G phone or bring a separate 5G version, as we do not doubt Qualcomm production (SD865 is eligible for 5G).

As per rumors, Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro should have 6GB and 8GB RAM respectively for the base model (paired with 128GB storage). There will be an exclusive memory variant with 12GB RAM and 256GB ROM for pro version only. According to PhoneArena, Oneplus 8’s Storage is UFS 3.0 (as of Oneplus 7), but RAM is DDR5 that is 50% faster and 30% more power-efficient than Oneplus 7’s DDR4 RAM.

Spreading light on Oneplus 8 Lite, it expected to bring 4/6 GB RAM and 64/128 GB internal memory. There is no microSD card slot, according to the rumors.

Oneplus 8 Camera

As we told above, Oneplus 8 will sport three photography cameras, whereas Oneplus 8 Pro will bring four snappers. According to some leaks, the primary wide camera on both Oneplus devices will have 64-megapixels. It is not hard to believe since we had received up to 48MP f/1.6 primary lens with Oneplus 7 Pro last year. The aperture seems to be f/1.6 for pro and f/1.7 for the non-pro model, just like precursors. The other optics configuration for Oneplus 8 is as follows – 16MP ultrawide + 12MP telephoto. However, the Pro model is adding an extra 3D Time of Flight sensor to that 16MP ultrawide and 13MP telephoto.

One thing is confirmed Oneplus will let you create 4k shots at 60fps and HD movies at 480fps. EIS and OIS must be available. We expect to see Super Slow-mo at incredible 960fps, which is yet in rumors.

Bye, Bye, pop-up selfie camera. The punch hole for Oneplus 8 will contain a 32MP lens, while the Oneplus 8 Pro will carry an unknown optics (probably ToF) next to that 32MP front camera (seemingly f/2.0 aperture).

We didn’t forget to talk about the Oneplus 8 Lite. The gadget is said to have dual back cameras, including a 48MP primary shooter (perhaps f/2.0 aperture). On the front, there will be a 16MP selfie camera (not a 32MP one like standard Oneplus 8). It is eligible for the FHD video recording.

Oneplus 8 Battery and Warp Charge

Rumors suggest Oneplus 8 to have a 4000mAh battery while a 4500mAh powerhouse for Oneplus 8 Pro. Both the smartphones should support 30W Warp Fast Charge. Max J, a reliable tipster, suggested on Twitter that Oneplus will adopt wireless charging technology this year (2020), and it will be exclusive to Oneplus 8 Pro. Some other rumors are pointing out the same, so we can at least consider it.

Last but not least, Oneplus 8 Lite is likely to have a 3500mAh power source and a standard Fast Charge.
