Samsung Galaxy Z Flip hands-on review

Last Update 2020-02-12

Introduction

Samsung surprisingly announced Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone just before the announcement of the S20 series. Instead of unveiling a Galaxy Fold 2 alongside the Galaxy S20 family, Samsung has chosen to take on the Motorola Razr 2019 with the Galaxy Z Flip. The Galaxy Z Flip has announced today at an event in San Francisco with a clamshell design. The Samsung Galaxy Fold was a small tablet that can fold into a phone. The new Galaxy Z Flip is a phone that can fold in half. Like the Razr, the Z Flip brings back memories of the flip phones of the early 2000s, and at first glance, it does have a certain amount of nostalgic charm.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition

Samsung Electronics and Thom Browne today also announced Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition, an exclusive collaboration from the leading technology company and iconic New York fashion brand. "Partnering with Samsung to create Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition was an incredible opportunity to reimagine how consumers express themselves through their smartphone, we designed Galaxy Z Flip Thom Browne Edition just like I do my collections—with proportion, individuality and aesthetic in mind—to create the perfect blend of art and technology," said Thom Browne.

The Special Edition features distinctive Thom Browne signature brand colors on a pebble grey exterior, pulled right from the runway, and offering all of the same innovative features as Galaxy Z Flip. To complete the look, the special edition version also arrives with custom-designed Galaxy Buds+ and Galaxy Watch Active2. "Working with Thom gave us the opportunity to make this stylish device even more covetable, bringing together Samsung's latest technology innovations with Thom's signature aesthetic inspired by his suits —the precision tailoring, the intentional use of materials, the elevated style that is uniquely his own," said Stephanie Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing Team of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

Price, Pre-orders and Shipment detail of Galaxy Z Flip

As the Samsung's big Unpacked 2020 event is over, and the pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip are already start. According to the company, the Galaxy Z Flip is going to become available in the US on February 14. It will ship on February 21 in the EU, and February 13 in the UK. The global availability of the phone is said to be completed in the mid of March. The Samsung Galaxy Z flip is only available in an 8GB of RAM/256GB of storage option, and it costs $1380. On the other hand, the Thom Browne Edition costs $1600 price for the same memory configuration.

Samsung Z Flip design and display

When folded, the Galaxy Z Flip is looking very square and chunky – although very pocketable. On the outside, there isn't a full screen; instead, it has a small outer display that'll show off the time and alert you to incoming notifications. This smaller display (Samsung is calling this the Cover Display) leaves the front feeling somewhat sparse. On the back panel (Cover display), there is a dual-camera setup and an LED flash. It has a centered punch-hole on the front panel for selfie sensor.

Flip the phone open, and you've got a large 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a 2636 x 1080 resolution and 21.9:9 aspect ratio. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip display is made of Samsung's 'Ultra-Thin Glass,' which seems to shoot for the same goal as the Motorola Razr with its P-OLED screen in creating a thin yet durable display. This is an ultra-thin folding glass screen which is an immediate upgrade on the Galaxy Fold. The screen of the Galaxy Z Flip looks beautiful – as typical with Samsung phones – with punchy colors and perfect blacks thanks to the use of OLED. Instead of embedding a fingerprint sensor inside the panel, Samsung has used a very quick sensor embedded inside the side. You can stand the Samsung Z Flip with the phone half-open, which Samsung is calling Flex Mode. Samsung said, "it worked with Google on the UI changes brought on by this mode, and it can create some new layouts in apps such as YouTube." It looks like this could be particularly useful for video chats via Google Duo, as you'll be able to call hands-free. The Ultra-Thin Glass also felt pretty durable, and when we tapped on the screen, even pretty hard, we didn't feel like the device was in any risk of breaking. A USB-C port and speaker grills are available at the bottom of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Front and Rear Cameras

On the back panel, it has a dual-camera setup for photography experience. In the dual-camera setup, there is a 12MP primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, 27mm (wide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm pixels, Dual Pixel, and PDAF, and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.2 aperture. The dual-camera setup is capable of 8x zoom, HDR+, and 4K video recording, and the primary wide sensor also packs OIS features. Furthermore, the centered punch-hole on the front panel houses a 10MP sensor for selfies and live calling experience. A 10MP selfie shooter of the Galaxy Z Flip has f/2.4 aperture, 26mm (wide), 1.22µm pixels, and PDAF. You can record 4k videos at 30fps by using the front camera of the phone.

Software and processor and battery of the Samsung Z Flip

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip runs the Android 10 operating system overlaid with the company's latest One UI 2 layer. There is a Adreno 640 (700 MHz) GPU. Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip is powered by the last year Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 855 Plus Chipset constructed on Octa-core (1x2.95 GHz Kryo 485 & 3x2.41 GHz Kryo 485 & 4x1.78 GHz Kryo 485) CPU. Samsung has announced this foldable phone only in the 4G option. As the Motorola is planning to unveil the 5G variant of Moto RAZR 2019 this year, so we hope Samsung will also launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5G version. The clamshell design foldable phone offers only 8GB of RAM and 256GB UFS 3.0 internal storage. Unfortunately, there is no option for a micro SD card slot. The second-generation Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone packs a 3,300 mAh battery, which supports up to 15W quick charging and wireless charging too.

Verdict

The Samsung Z Flip arrives with a 6.7-inch display that fold in half. It's very different from the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Unlike the S20 series, the Z Flip isn't fussed on boasting the top-end specs with the main focus here clearly the unique design, and it remains expensive. On the other hand, the Z Flip is also intriguing with a bigger battery and a thin glass to protect the 6.7-inch inner display.
