Super LCD 3 VS Super AMOLED Hot Display Comparison

Currently their two types of screen being used on mobiles; tablets and other such devices and they are the most popular types of screens on android phones. These screens are Super Amoled and Super LCD 3.

There are two such examples; HTC has used Super LCD 3 for their flagship HTC One M8 and on the contrary Samsung the creator of Super AMOLED uses this on their devices like Samsung Galaxy S5. Since the two big companies are using both the technologies AMOLED and Super LCD 33, we can say they are equally good but they are different technologies and have some differences to compare.

SUPER AMOLED

Super AMOLED emerged from OLED ('organic light-emitting diode). It consists of a thin film with electrodes at each side. Its emits light when electric current is passed through them. Developing further on OLED, Amoled is developed with addition of Active-Matrix to same elements that existed in OLED. Active matrix adds a semi conducting layer behind OLED and accelerates the action of activating pixels. It has much faster speed with possibility of larger definition display and larger number of pixels. Super AMOLED is thousand times more in speed than an LCD. In case of AMOLED, each pixel gives light rather than a general arrangement of backlight and gives a better contrast in colors. To create a true black, simply the pixels are turned off instead of dimming the backlight. The AMOLED screen has a large combination of colors to display huge variety of colors but this quality sometimes looks over saturated in the picture.

The AMOLED screens have no distortion in viewing from very wide angles. Since this is arrangement of light emitting thin films, they are very flexible and can be made transparent and can be used on curved handsets. Such curved handsets are getting frequently available and popular among the users. One such example is Samsung Galaxy Round. There is another characteristic of AMOLED. They have extra layer on top of the screen that is touch sensitive. In case of SUPER AMOLED, this touch sensitive layer has been dispensed with an integrated sensitivity of the screen. This arrangement has a big benefit; the screen becomes very light, very thin and has the touch sensitivity and with all these qualities it is very economical on power consumption. With only additions of a very thin layer it reflects bright sun light in a very negligible quantity.

Super AMOLED has PenTile matrix with less subpixels has the effect of image burn. On the contrary this effect is not there in case of LCD which shows the picture comparatively less sharp and with color tint.

Samsung has developed this technology and uses it extensively on its major devices like Samsung Galaxy S5 and all S series. However it is developing other variations for better results.

SUPER LCD 3

LCD was the previous generation invention and now further development on this is Super LCD 3. It does not have each pixel given light but it has liquid crystal display with a back light which lights the entire screen. The previous LCD air gap separated the glass and the display film but with more experimentation, there is no air gap and the Super LCD 3 gives the same effect as the Super Amoled.

With this arrangement outdoor visibility has increased and the thickness has reduced using les battery power.

In case of Super LCD 3 power consumption is further reduced in case of colors which are lighter in hue, like web browsing where the background is mostly white. It is contrary to the Super AMOLED which uses less power in case of black, pixels being switched off.

We have Super LCD 3 2 and 3 and the difference between the 2 lies in their brightness, no blurring of videos, faster refresh rate and viewing angles. These are the academic differences but practical experience is a little different. We have impressive examples of both; HTC uses Super LCD 3 with excellent results and Samsung Galaxy S5 makes use of Super Amoled, again with ideal performance.

We have referred to Samsung Galaxy S5 probably S5 does not have long enough life to be compared with HTC One (M8). Galaxy S5shows the colors in their best therefore comparison has been made between S5 and HTC One (M8).

HTC One (M8) with Super LCD 3 screen is brighter and true in colors than Samsung Galaxy S5using Super Amoled screen. Reason for this difference is HTC One (M8) can produces 500 nits light output, and Galaxy S5produces 300 nits or around. HTC One (M8) with Super LCD 3 performs better in outdoor environments.

The Samsung Galaxy S5has better contrast, rich colors and better performance in dim surroundings.

Super LCD 3 and Super Amoled differ in performance under bright or dark light environments.

Screens with Super LCD 3 have better viewing angles and contrasts as compare to Super AMOLED, but both perform well with less reflection and better performance outdoor.

Good contrast and rich and bright colors go in favor of Super AMOLED, whereas outdoor performance in bright light speaks better for Super LCD 3.

The major difference between Super AMOLED and Super LCD 3 is of performance in outdoor conditions and showing the colors in their true view. LCD 3 shows colors more natural as compare to Super AMOLED as can be seen from Galaxy S5.
