Cyanogen to Disable Services on December 31

Has Android won the race? Or do we need to wait and re-mod?

December 26, 2016

The famous alternative ROM company Cyanogen Inc, which planned to take away from the Google Android, providing a clean operating system for users, without the services of the search giant, is going through hard times. The company said goodbye to Steve Kondikom (cyanogen), the founder of Cyanogen Mod, and changed its CEO. After that, the Cyanogen Inc began massive layoffs, and the company has announced the conversion of Cyanogen OS in a modular platform that will cover parts. Now the company has disbanded, all services which Cyanogen Inc supported cease to exist before the end of this year. The source code will be available for those who choose to collect CyanogenMod for their own smartphone.

The fallout of team CyanogenMod team, not part of Cyanogen Inc, called these events "not unpredictable" after the dispute with Steve Kondikom. It voiced concerns about the further actions of the company, which may, for example, sell someone the whole brand of CyanogenMod. Therefore CyanogenMod team has decided to start work on a fork of the firmware, which will be given the name of Lineage. The big relief is that the open source community project upon which Cyanogen is based can, and most probably will, see the light of the next day. The massive problem it now faces is the similar to as any other Android mod team, namely the curse of time and lack of big resources. It's really hard to make decent money on these mods, and with the team Android becoming more and more resourceful, it seems a hard thing. So what is your opinion about this latest announcement? What may happen to Cyanogenmod in coming times? Are you a mobile enthusiast who’s thinking to use some of that original source code?
